Charente is the quieter, inland counterpart to its coastal neighbour, Charente-Maritime, best known as the home of Cognac, the world-famous brandy produced in the town of the same name. Good road links put the Atlantic beaches of Charente-Maritime around an hour and a half away. Layered with cognac and comic-art history, Charente is home to Cognac's world-famous distilleries, and to Angoulême, which hosts an internationally renowned festival of comic-strip art each January.
